How to turn a PDF into a quiz
Updated
A step-by-step guide to turning lecture notes, chapters and handouts into a quiz in seconds, with tips for getting better questions.
Turning a PDF into a quiz is one of the fastest ways to check whether you really understand something you have read. Instead of writing questions by hand, you can let a quiz generator draft them from the document and spend your time actually answering them. This guide walks through the process and shares a few tips for getting the best questions.
Step 1: Pick the right PDF
The best results come from PDFs that contain real, selectable text: lecture notes exported from Word or Google Docs, textbook chapters, articles, policies and handouts. A quick test is to open the PDF and try to highlight a sentence. If you can select the words, the quiz generator can read them. If the page behaves like a photo, it is probably a scan, and scanned pages do not work yet.
Keep the document focused. A single chapter or one week of notes gives sharper questions than an entire course pack. PDFQuizGenerator accepts up to 100 pages, which is enough for several chapters or a whole module's notes.
Step 2: Upload and choose how many questions
Open the home page, drag your PDF onto the upload box or tap Choose a PDF. Your browser reads the text from the file on your own device, so the PDF itself is never uploaded. You will see the file name and page count once it is ready.
Then choose 5, 10, 20, 30 or 50 questions. Five is good for a quick warm-up, ten is a solid self-test for one topic, and twenty to fifty work well for revising longer material before an exam. You can also pick the question type (multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, short answer or a mix), the difficulty, and a page range if you only want one chapter.
Step 3: Generate and take the quiz
Press Generate quiz. It usually takes 10 to 20 seconds. The questions are spread across the whole document, and every answer comes with a one-sentence explanation. You answer one question at a time and see straight away whether you were right.
Step 4: Review and share
At the end you get your score and a review of every question. Use Try again to retake it after a break, or Copy share link to send the quiz to a study partner. Share links work for 30 days, and anyone with the link can take the quiz without uploading anything.
The same questions also work as flashcards or a printable worksheet, and you can export them to Anki, Quizlet, Kahoot or Google Forms from the quiz page. No PDF to hand? Paste your notes or a web page link instead.
Tips for better questions
- Remove cover pages, reference lists and appendices if they are not part of what you are studying.
- Slides with only a few words each produce thinner questions; notes with full sentences work better.
- If a question looks wrong, check it against your notes. The quiz is a study aid, not a textbook.
- Generate a fresh quiz from the same PDF on a later day to get new questions.
Try it with your own PDF. Free, no sign-up, and your file never leaves your device.
