How to make a Google Forms quiz from a PDF
Updated
Turn a PDF, notes or web page into a self-marking Google Forms quiz without typing the questions in, using a short Apps Script that runs in your own account.
Google Forms quizzes mark themselves and collect every student's answers in one place, which makes them ideal for homework and quick assessments. Writing the questions is the slow part. This guide shows how to turn a PDF, your notes or a web page into a self-marking Google Forms quiz, without copying questions in one by one.
Step 1: Generate the questions
Add your PDF on the quiz generator (or paste text, or give a web page link). Choose the number of questions and a difficulty. For a quiz that marks itself completely, choose Multiple choice or True or false. Mixed works too: fill-in-the-blank and short-answer questions come across as short-answer questions you mark yourself. Press Generate quiz and read the questions through.
Step 2: Copy the Google Forms script
Google Forms can't import a file of questions directly, but Google's own scripting tool, Apps Script, can build a form for you. On the quiz page, under Export to, press Google Forms. A short script containing your questions is copied to your clipboard.
Step 3: Run it in your Google account
- Open script.google.com. A new, empty project opens.
- Delete the few lines of code that are there, and paste the script.
- Press Run.
- Google asks you to allow access. The script needs permission to create a form in your Google Drive; it only creates this one quiz.
- When it finishes, the Execution log shows two links: one to edit the quiz and one to send to students.
Step 4: Check and send it
Open the edit link. Every question is already set up as a quiz question worth one point, with the correct answer marked and the explanation shown as feedback. Add a title image, change points, or turn on Collect email addresses in Settings if you need to know who answered. Then press Publish (or Send) and share the link with your class.
Multiple choice and true or false questions are marked automatically. Short-answer questions show the model answer as feedback, and you can mark them in the Responses tab.
Why a script rather than a file?
The script runs in your own Google account, so the form belongs to you, sits in your Drive and works with Google Classroom like any other form. Nothing is shared with us, and you don't need any add-ons or extra sign-ups.
Other ways to use the questions
Prefer a live game? Import the same questions into Kahoot. Need a paper version? Print a worksheet with an answer key.
Try it with your own PDF. Free, no sign-up, and your file never leaves your device.
