How it works

  1. Add your material

A PDF, pasted text or a web page link.

  2. Choose how many

5 to 50 blanks, easy to hard.

  3. Print or practise

A worksheet with answer key, or an online quiz.

Why fill in the blank works

Gap-fill questions make learners produce the word themselves instead of recognising it in a list, which is harder and better for memory. They are ideal for key vocabulary, definitions, names, dates and the steps of a process.

Each sentence is built from your material with exactly one important word or short phrase removed, and only one answer can fit. The answer key lists the missing words with a one-line explanation.

Worksheets, online practice and cloze cards

This page starts on Worksheet, so you get a printable gap-fill worksheet with the answer key on a separate page. Switch to Quiz to practise online instead: learners type the missing word and it is marked straight away, forgiving capital letters, accents and small typos.

The same questions export to Anki as cloze cards, the format Anki users rely on for learning terms, and to Google Forms as short-answer questions with the answer shown as feedback.

Which material works best?

Text written in full sentences: textbook extracts, notes, articles and glossaries. Scanned PDFs are not supported yet.
