Anki for medical and nursing students: decks from your lecture PDFs

Updated

How medical, nursing and MCAT students can turn lecture slides and notes into Anki decks in minutes, and a daily review routine that keeps the workload manageable.

Anki is the default study tool in many medical and nursing schools, and for good reason: spaced repetition is the most efficient way to remember the huge volume of facts in pharmacology, anatomy, microbiology and physiology. The hard part is making the cards. Premade decks are excellent for board exams, but your own lectures, with your lecturers' emphasis, are what your exams are written from. Here is how to turn them into Anki cards quickly.

Premade decks or your own?

Use both. Community decks for USMLE, MCAT and similar exams are carefully checked and cover the standard material. Your school exams, though, test what was taught in your lectures, including local guidelines, drug names your hospital uses and the details your lecturer lingered on. Cards made from your own slides fill that gap.

From lecture PDF to Anki deck in five minutes

  1. Open PDF to Anki and drop in the lecture's slides or notes as a PDF.
  2. For a long file, tick "Only use some pages" and pick one lecture. One deck (or sub-deck) per lecture keeps daily reviews predictable.
  3. Choose 20 to 30 cards. For cloze cards, which suit drug names, enzymes, nerves and definitions, switch to Quiz and pick "Fill in the blank" (or "Mixed") as the question type: fill-in-the-blank questions export to Anki as cloze notes.
  4. Read through the cards on the site and note any you would word differently.
  5. Press Anki under "Export to" and, in Anki, choose File → Import. Edit or delete weak cards there.

Slides with only a few words per page give thinner cards. Handouts or notes written in full sentences work best; if your slides are sparse, paste your own notes into Notion to Anki instead. Scanned PDFs are not supported yet.

A daily routine that stays manageable

  • Add cards the same day as the lecture. Your first review then doubles as revision.
  • Cap new cards. Around 20 to 40 new cards a day is sustainable for most students.
  • Never skip reviews. Missed days pile up; ten minutes on a busy day beats zero.
  • Suspend, do not delete. If a card is not worth learning now, suspend it.
  • Understand first. Cards help you remember what you understood, not replace understanding.

Nursing, MCAT and other exams

The same approach works for nursing pharmacology and fundamentals, MCAT content review, physician associate and allied health courses. For practice in exam format, make a multiple choice quiz from the same PDF with the multiple choice question generator and take it with a timer. Already have cards in Quizlet? Move them with the Quizlet to Anki converter.

Keep your data private

Lecture material and anything clinical should not be uploaded to random websites. PDFQuizGenerator reads your PDF in your browser; only the extracted text is sent to write the questions, and only the finished cards are stored for 30 days. Never include patient information in anything you study with online tools. See the privacy policy for details.

Try it with your own PDF. Free, no sign-up, and your file never leaves your device.
